Some Nights

Pop music, like contemporary Country, is a sewer pipe of melodic crap these days. However, there are gems here & there, and I think "Some Nights" by Fun is one of them. It is all the more interesting in that it has inspired quite a few clever covers from talented individuals on the interwebs. I can only guess the reason for it is that the song requires highly skilled vocals instead of the usual studio over-mixed, re-dubbed numbers that are only interesting (mildly) in concert with highly choreographed productions, over-the-top costuming and seizure inducing video.... or said another way, the song is unusual in that it requires talent to pull off.

First up is Peter Hollens cover, done entirely with human instruments, that is voice and clapping. The videography is also particularly well-done.

Also interesting is what these young Internetters have done to create a cover, recording themselves individually and mixing all the videos together.

If you search YouTube, you'll find many many more of these covers. Some are bad but a good many are worth the while.

And of course, if you haven't seen the original video then its quite entertaining... at least to me. It's not often you see pop videos with Civil War reenactments.

  1. If I heard the song without it, I'd prolly just change the station, but the video was very eye-catching. I think it's the first I've ever seen with Civil War reenactors.

BTW, you and I should do our own cover. Work on your vocals. I just want to play the drum. That guy looked like he was having fun.

    1. OH yes, the original is the best.

But I'll do drums and you do vocals. I hear that scraggly, smokey voice is the new black. :)
