When A Plan Comes Together

Though I was "late" for today's blogger shoot and missed out on the cool firearms, I did manage to get my AR-15 sighted in. My suspicion was right... I had an ammo problem. With the 55gr Remington UMC, I was getting 4 inch groups. Awhile back I went to Virginia Arms and bought a selection of every .223 they had with a bullet weight greater than 55gr.

Top L-R: Hornady TAP 60gr, Hornady TAP 75gr; Bottom L-R: Prvi Partizan 75gr, Fusion 62 gr
As you can see, all but the Prvi Partizan is over $1/round. As it turns out, the bullet weight counts a lot. Here are the results from today's range time.

My first string was the Prvi Partizan 75gr, but as you can see it wasn't so great. I chalk that one up to me getting my shit together. After regrouping my thoughts and concentrating on what I was doing, the second string was a much tighter set of Prvi Partizan 75gr. Then I moved to the Fusion 62gr, then the Hornady 75gr, and finally the Hornday 60gr. As you can see, the 75gr bullets grouped tighter than the 60/62gr bullets.

I've heard that barrels with 1:7 twists required higher bullet weights, but I didn't think the difference would be this dramatic. But with the 75gr ammo, I cannot discern a difference between the Hornady and Prvi Partizan with regards to accuracy... though I can with regards to price. So I'll be looking around for the Prvi to use in practice and matches.
