Remember when those atheist, Ground Zero mosque supporting lefties were going on and on about the coming George Bush Christianist theocracy taking over America? Remember when those atheist, Ground Zero mosque supporting lefties were telling us Sarah Palin was unfit for public office because she was a Christian holy war crusader? Remember when those lefties joined with Michael Bloomberg in support of the trampling of Constitutionally enumerated individual liberties?
Perhaps it's cool to be religious again for atheist lefties... as long as that religion has a large anti-American constituency. Perhaps it's hip once again to loudly pontificate the needful place of religion in the public square... as long as it has nothing to do with our currency or Pledge of Allegiance. Perhaps it is time again to defend basic first amendment freedoms... well, as long as the antagonists aren't the sort to kill people over cartoons.
Perhaps it's cool again to speak of fundamental rights... as long as that right isn't spelled out in the Second Amendment. Perhaps it's cool to lecture the proletariat about their need for tolerance... as long as you don't do it while officially hosting the dictator of a nation that hangs men for the crime of being gay and stones women for the offense of being raped.
Don't get me wrong... I'm not saying Muslims shouldn't enjoy the same privileges, immunities, and due process of law as the rest of us. (After all, if Rima Fakih is wrong, I don't want to be right.) I just think the left is being grossly hypocritical... again. While there are millions and millions of decent Muslims in this world, let's not ignore what is obviously happening here: the attempt to put an Islamic place of worship so close to ground zero is an act intended to incite, anger, and offend millions of Americans. It's not like that neighborhood is the epicenter of a large, practicing Muslim population. (See ‘Abd Al-Rahman Al-Rashed's take on this.) And if bringing tolerance to both sides of the dialog is the real goal, it's not lower Manhattan that needs sensitivity lessons regarding the right to be free of facial hair or the crime of driving while female.
It is freedom from being offended that is the cornerstone of the argument these lefties use for their redistributionist policies. They are offended that the rich have more wealth than the poor. (It certainly can't be about helping the poor, because no attempt at wealth redistribution has ever succeeded at doing that.) Yes, they trumpet the need to be free from offense... hate crimes, political correctness, too many fat people, too many SUV drivers, and too many people making more money than they. But yet, they see no offense in this.
Such is the mind of an atheist lefty. They take no notice of Obama sitting in the church of Rev. Wright for 20 years, but Sarah Palin is the one with dangerous religious views.
UPDATE: Put this in the "so crazy it has to be real" department, a Jihadist Muslim who believes in death for the sake of Allah has found the Ground Zero Mosque to be offensive. Well, the guy does have somewhat of a point. If there is one thing the Ground Zero Mosque is certain to do, it is to remind people that on 9/11 some three thousand people were killed in the name of Islam. And you know who might be offended by that... peaceful Muslims. Like Christians, Hindus and others, peaceful Muslims don't like the idea of nutjobs killing in the name of their religion.
ANOTHER UPDATE: To the point made above: Moderate Muslims oppose location of Cordoba Mosque — on religious grounds.
